Mutual benefits of upskilling
While skill development has always been important, it has become even more urgent as labor markets tighten and businesses require workers who can stay up to date with emerging technologies that are changing the way work is done. Upskilling is the most successful strategy to close employee skills gaps, according to 80% of respondents in a recent survey of over 80 CEOs of tech-focused US firms. Only 28% of firms, according to the survey, intend to fund upskilling initiatives in the upcoming two to three years.
Businesses that put off starting skill-building initiatives run the risk of losing out on significant advantages for both their employees and the company as a whole. According to earlier McKinsey research, the biggest obstacle to employees’ willingness to change careers and broaden their horizons is their skill set.Upskilling employees are a highly motivated and sought-after talent pool for organizations. At the same time, businesses with strong people development departments show greater resilience and more steady earnings. With attrition rates roughly five percentage points lower than those of companies that place a greater emphasis on financial performance, they are also better at keeping people. Businesses are four times more likely to surpass their rivals financially if they prioritize both financial success and human capital development.
